§ 20-217. Selection of medical examiner candidates.

  • (a)

    In the event of a vacancy or anticipated vacancy in the office of medical examiner, the mayor shall call for a candidate search committee. The members of the candidate search committee shall be appointed by the mayor with confirmation by majority approval of the board of county commissioners. The search committee may consist of invited representatives from the offices of the state attorney(s), public defender(s), sheriff(s), police chief(s), county commission(s), funeral homes and/or a representative of the local medical community and/or a physician member of the medical examiners commission and, in the case of partnership with a neighboring county by inter-local agreement, invited representatives from that county.

    (b)

    The mayor shall select a member of the candidate search committee to act as chairman of the committee.

    (c)

    The candidate search committee shall seek applications from interested candidates, establish an interview team and make recommendations to the mayor.

    (d)

    In making an appointment, the mayor may seek the assistance of the medical examiners commission.
